November 2017 – Best Thanksgiving Ever!

“Daniel, I do believe this past week’s Thanksgiving celebration was the best ever!”

“Really, Martha? What makes you say that?”

“Only the best food, family and festivities that I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying.”

“Come to think of it, Martha, you may have a point. This year’s turkey tasted delicious with a buttery herb quality, not to mention the homemade stuffing, and did you sample the oyster stew?”

“Ah, yes, Daniel, I sampled all the delicacies derived from our local bounty from the sea. There’s nothing like a holiday feast enjoyed by Maryland’s Eastern Shore, especially the collards-stuffed ham that goes so well with the turkey.”

“Our quaint town of Captain’s Point shown brightly this Thanksgiving, didn’t it, Martha?”

“Most assuredly.”

“Families came together in celebration throughout the entire community. Young and old alike made lasting memories of time spent practicing traditions and establishing new ones, Martha.”

“You can say that again. Time to deck the halls, now, Daniel.”

“I suppose you’re right again, Martha. Thanksgiving is over, but the celebrations continue creating Christmas magic, one household and business at a time. Our citizens will start spreading Christmas cheer from one end of town to the other for all to enjoy.”

“Thank you for making my Thanksgiving the best ever this year, Daniel.”

“You’re welcome, Martha. Now, will you join me in an eggnog toast to kick off the holiday season?”

“Yes, Daniel, I will.”

October 2017 – Pumpkins and Pitch Forks!

“Martha, it’s that time again.”

“Yes, Martha. In no time at all, our town will come alive with the spirit of the season.”

“Haven’t you seen the pumpkins piling up on everyone’s porch and entry way, Daniel?”

“I have. All waiting to be carved! Which reminds me of all the pumpkins I carved in the name of our Octoberfest Harvest celebrations over the years. My favorite, by far, was the largest carving job I’d ever done.”

“You mean the one with the design of children trick or treating that had a lacy look to it, Daniel?”

“Exactly, Martha. It took me two weeks to carve the intricate designs.”

“I believe it, Daniel. That was a grand prize winner, and if I remember correctly, you also had something to do with those frightening scarecrows we put up in the corn maze.”

“Ah yes, some of my finest work, Martha. Especially the one with the piercing eyes and rags for clothes.”

“Indeed, Daniel. Your scarecrow grasping the pitch fork generally came out on top when the votes were tallied.”

“Those were good times, Martha. Memories that last a lifetime and beyond.”

“Here’s to this year’s scary, frightening, fun-filled Octoberfest Harvest celebration, Daniel.”

“I’ll second that, Martha. Happy Hauntings!”

September 2017 – Late-Summer Surprises!

“Fall is just around the corner, Martha. Wouldn’t you say?”

“I suppose it is, Daniel, but let me enjoy these late summer days while they last.”

“Of course. Warm, pleasant days and cooler evenings are perfect for strolling around town or catching a break from the beach crowds for a walk along the shore.”

“Now that classes have begun again for the school children of Captain’s Point, parents have returned to work and daily routines have started again.”

“Speaking of daily routines, I’ve given ours some thought, Martha.”

“In what way, Daniel?”

“That’s for me to know and you to find out, my love.”

“You’re the mysterious one, Daniel. Something is always up your sleeve.”

“Indeed, Martha. This year, let’s just call them my late summer surprises.”

“How about a hint?”

“Not on your life, Martha. My secrets will be revealed to you in time, one after the other.”

“You old romantic!”

“Here’s the first to whet your appetite.”

“Daniel! One single, fragrant red rose. Did you get this out of Montgomery House’s garden?”

“I did, Martha. Just for you, with promises of enduring, eternal love between us.”

“You surprise me every day, Daniel, with your endless capacity for caring and love. I will spend eternity with you.”

“That’s a relief, because I’m counting on it, Martha.”

August 2017 – Summer Cruising!

“What a lovely summer cruise we enjoyed last evening aboard Martha’s Joy, Daniel. Thank you for suggesting it.”

“We did have a memorable evening didn’t we, Martha?”

“Yes, Daniel. Cruising always takes my breath away. Our town of Captain’s Point looks especially picturesque from the sea.”

“I remember when we were younger, and we’d sneak off for a spin around the Point in my family’s sailboat.”

“We’d wait until sunset, and I’d bring a picnic basket full of treats, Daniel. Remember?”

“Those brownies and cookies you made were to die for.”

“Baking for you was always a pleasure, Daniel. I loved seeing your face light up over such a simple thing when I opened the basket.”

“Not as much as I enjoyed every last crumb of those sweet morsels of chocolate, Martha. Why don’t we take the family sailboat next time we have the urge to cruise?”

“A lovely thought, Daniel, but truthfully, I prefer the comforts of my yacht a little more these days. I could sit all night in its teak deck chairs and gaze out at the sea and up at the stars.”

“Or take a moonlight stroll along the decks, Martha.”

“Yes, Daniel, I do love those moonlit strolls.”

“Summer is my favorite season, Martha, and when we combine it with the relaxation of cruising, I’m in heaven.”

“You can say that again, Daniel. We’re both in heaven.”

July 2017 – Fire pits and Fireworks!

“July is here, Daniel. The year is half over. Where does the time go?”

“I haven’t the vaguest idea, Martha. The only thing I know is that it’s fire pit and fireworks time again.”

“You always did enjoy celebrating the Fourth every year. The Montgomery bonfire was an event to attend. Remember how we’d build a great big bonfire and snuggle by the ocean. We’d set up our beach chairs and get ready for the main event.”

“I do, but you have to admit, Martha, that the pyrotechnics have come a long way since we were young.”

“You’re right, Daniel. I didn’t think anything could top last year’s display at Montgomery Marina, but I have high hopes for this year.”

“As do I, Martha. A little birdie told me that something special and cutting edge has been planned.”

“Do tell, Daniel.”

“Not a chance, Martha. I don’t want to spoil the look of delight on your face, just like when you were younger.”

“Are you saying I’m old, Daniel?”

“Of course not, Martha. You’re as young as you feel.”

“Seeing the look on the faces of the youth in Captain’s Point as they marvel at the lights in the sky exploding with color always makes me smile.”

“Yes, Martha, the youth of today are Captain’s Point’s citizens of tomorrow. Let them enjoy this sweet time of celebration, making memories to last them a lifetime, exactly as we have through the years.”

“I wholeheartedly agree, Daniel. Happy Fourth of July.”

“Happy Fourth, Martha.”

June 2017 – Summer’s Around the Corner!

“Don’t you just love this time of year, Martha? Makes me want to grab a lounge chair and take a snooze.”

“Yes, Daniel. I do love the warmer weather and all this sunshine. I could go for some beach time right now.”

“Me, too, but first let’s eat. Between regatta practices and try-outs, walks on the beach and people watching, I’ve worked up quite an appetite.”

“You mean you didn’t get your fill of good Chesapeake Bay seafood at the Chesterton’s annual clam bake, Daniel?”

“That was a great time, and I did enjoy myself, Martha.”

“I suppose one can never get enough of delicious food around here between our family and friends’ beach barbecues, picnics, clambakes and boardwalk treats.”

“Speaking of the boardwalk, Martha, why don’t we take a little stroll down to the marina and explore the boardwalk this afternoon.”

“Great idea. Let me get my parasol and sunglasses. Then I’m ready.”

“Martha, somehow I don’t think you’ll need those. I’m here to take care of you – always by your side.”

“That’s what I’ve always dreamed of, Daniel, and now my wish has come true – you by my side.”

“Always, my love.”

May 2017 – May Flowers and Sails!

“I never thought those April showers would end, Martha.”

“Neither did I, Daniel, but you know what they say, no pain, no gain.”

“If that’s the case, then I expect Captain’s Point will be a sea of color in a matter of days. Don’t you?”

“The warmer weather has descended upon us as well, Martha.”

“As a matter of fact, Daniel, I’ve seen an increasing number of brave beach-goers gathering by bonfires on these still chilly evenings.”

“Come to think of it, Martha, I’ve even seen sailors practicing for the annual Captain’s Point Regatta taking place soon.”

“I do enjoy watching that event every year, Daniel. It reminds me of our younger days when you’d take me for a sail on the weekends.”

“We’d take off and go where the wind took us. Remember, Martha?”

“Yes, especially a particular Sunday afternoon when we sailed up the coast a piece.”

“You packed us a delicious picnic lunch. We dropped anchor and waded to shore.”

“That afternoon was perfect, Daniel. We ate, talked, walked and swam.”

“Happy May memories, Martha.”

“Indeed they are, Daniel. I’ll treasure them forever.”

“As will I, my love.”

April 2017 – Spring Is Here!

“Daniel, don’t you love springtime! The trees are budding, the grass is growing greener, and daffodils are blooming.”

“Yes, Martha. What a change! Thank goodness our last snowflake has fallen.”

“I’ve big plans for the gardens at Montgomery House this year.”

“In your dreams, Martha, although I know that little green thumb of yours is itching to plant a new crop of gorgeous spring specimens, if you could.”

“You know me too well, Daniel. In that case, I’ll turn to planning my heirloom tomato garden instead.”

“Several knowledgeable gardening professionals have been assigned that task already, Martha. I’ve seen numerous landscape companies’ trucks over at the house, since fear of another frost has passed.”

“I’ll leave it to the experts then, Daniel. Like you said, I can dream, can’t I?”

“I wouldn’t want it any other way, Martha. Happy Spring!”

“Happy Spring, Daniel. May our hearts burst with renewed passion and growth this season.”

“For eternity, Martha.”

March 2017 – In Like a Lamb, Out Like a Lion!

“Daniel, I can already smell spring in the air, can’t you?”

“Can’t say that I do, Martha. I’m not as attuned to those subtleties as you are. My mind’s on sports this month.”

“Things never change do they, Daniel?”

“I don’t follow.”

“Everywhere I turn in town, there’s either a basketball or hockey game playing on someone’s television set or streaming through their phone.”

“Wait a minute, Martha. I’m not that bad, am I?  At least, not yet?”

“Daniel, it’s not that I don’t want you to enjoy your favorite pastime. It’s that I want us to enjoy the simpler pleasures in life as springtime visits our lovely town. The days are getting longer, giving us more quality time to stroll along the marina’s footpaths and walkways like we used to.”

“What a lovely thought, Martha. We’ll create our own March memories together – in our own way.”

“Sounds like a little romance awaits, Daniel.”

“Of course…that is, until baseball season gets into full swing.”

“Whatever you say. I want to be right by your side every minute. Well, almost every minute.”

“If March comes in like a lamb with this mild, spring-like weather, I can’t wait until it goes out like a lion and we have one of those big snowstorms, Martha. Then we could gather by the fireplace, cuddle on the sofa, and watch a ballgame.”

“I repeat, Daniel. Whatever you say, as long as we’re together.”

“Always, Martha.”

February 2017 – Love Is In the Air!

“Did you see that never-ending parade of men, young and old, going in and out of Beth’s Buds

Florist today, Daniel?”

“You mean that line that went all the way down the street, Martha?”

“It’s that time of year, Martha. Valentine’s Day is around the corner! I suppose they need to reserve their orders of roses. Around here, you can’t count on waiting until the last minute.”

“I know, Daniel. I was young once, too. Living in Captain’s Point brings out the romantic side in a man.”

“And I remember, years ago when I had a certain someone I loved, giving flowers to them on Valentine’s Day, Martha.”

“You’re right about the need to reserve them early, Daniel. I remember the first year we celebrated Valentine’s Day together. You were so embarrassed that you waited until the last minute to buy flowers for me, and you said the florist told you that he had just sold his last rose.”

“But I learned from that experience.”

“Yes you did, Daniel, but that year you gave me the most precious bouquet that I treasured then and for years, once I’d dried it.”

“It was made up of three scarlet tulips surrounded by baby’s breath.”

“You told me the florist had said the red tulip is the symbol of fresh beginnings. I’ll never forget those words at the start of our courtship.”

“Neither will I, Martha. Love is in the air.”

“I agree one hundred percent. Happy Valentine’s Day, Daniel.”

January 2017 – Happy New Year!

“2016 flew by, didn’t it, Daniel?”

“You can say that again, Martha. Christmas came way too fast this year and was gone in a flash.”

“I had barely caught my breath from observing the Christmas parade at the marina and the tree lighting. Before I knew it, Captain’s Point residents were planning their big New Year’s Eve party at the marina.”

“And what a party it was, Martha. This year’s turnout was much better than last, probably because of the milder weather.”

“I’d say you were right, judging by the crowds mingling and shopping on the boardwalk, Daniel.”

“And when our mayor announced the 30 second countdown, oh, what a roar.”

“Noise makers, cheering and yelling, and all that confetti floating through the air reminded me of old times, Daniel.”

“I heard a few champagne corks popping in the crowd as well, reminding me of the last New Year’s Eve we spent together, nestled under a blanket on a boardwalk bench, drinking sparkling cider as fireworks exploded in the distance.”

“That was a special year, Daniel.”

“At the stroke of midnight, we kissed. I’ll never forget that look of love in your eyes that night, Martha.”

“Neither will I forget the look of love in yours.”

“Here’s to 2017! May the new year bring continuing peace and prosperity to our little town.”

“Happy New Year, Daniel.”

“Happy New Year, Martha.”

October 21, 2016 – Octoberfest in Captain’s Point!

“Are you ready to celebrate Octoberfest, Daniel?”

“Do you even have to ask, Martha? You know I’ve looked forward to Captain’s Point Octoberfest celebration since I was a kid.”

“As have I, Daniel.”

“I wouldn’t miss witnessing the jack-o-lantern carving contest. Back in the day, I remained champion for a couple of years in high school with my unique designs.”

“You may remember, Daniel, that I was always a finalist in the Festival’s pumpkin pie making contest. My combination of ingredients won me first prize for years.”

“You always did make a tasty pie, Martha.”

“While you were setting up the haunted house, I helped at the wreath-making contest tables. Decorating wreaths with the younger children brought me a joy I’ll never forget.”

“Ah, the haunted house! I haven’t thought about that in years, but those were good times. All the guys on the football team helped out. We strung creepy, crawly fake spider webs all over, and one volunteer jumped out of the dark to scare everyone. Screams, laughs and scary noises filled the make-shift space.”

“I remember that well, Daniel.  My favorite activity, though, was the corn maze. Over and over again, I loved to go and get lost in the mazes of corn stalks.”

“Remember the one year, Martha, when I jumped out from behind the stalks and scared you but good.”

“Yes, I do. You always were the prankster, as you continue to be.”

“Isn’t that what life’s all about, Martha? Having a little fun along the way? At least in October, that is.”

“Here’s to Octoberfest, Daniel. Let’s raise our glasses of apple cider.”

“To Octoberfest, Martha.”

September 2016 – Fall is Officially Here!

“Don’t you love the crisp autumn air sweeping over Captain’s Point, Daniel? Fall is officially here!”

“There is something to be said for the cooler nights and fall activities, Martha.”

“The leaves on the trees are turning beautiful oranges, reds and a golden shade of yellow that I love.”

“Fire pits are being lit in the evenings all over Captain’s Point, Martha. Oh, what I’d give for one of those gooey toasted marshmallows right now.”

“Don’t get me started, Daniel.  I’m in the mood for one of those new concoctions I’ve heard about – a s’more. I think that’s what they call it. Graham crackers, chocolate bars and roasted marshmallows – what could be better?”

“Now you’ve gone and done it, Martha.”

“What have I done, Daniel?”

“You’ve revved up my insatiable appetite for delectable sweets. That’s what.”

“In that case, you won’t want to know about the freshly baked apple and pumpkin pies down at the Captain’s Point Bakery.”

“Quit torturing me, Martha. The aroma alone from those pies, not to mention the freshly baked cookies, donuts and cupcakes is heavenly.

“I’ll agree with you on that, Daniel. It is indeed.”

August 31, 2016 – Schools in Session

“Well, Daniel, beach blankets and swimsuits have been swapped out for book bags and school uniforms.”

“Really? I hadn’t noticed, Martha.”

“If you’d ever get out of that hammock you’ve been glued to all summer, you might have noticed the children and parents of Captain’s Point shopping for school supplies. Buses fill the roads now, carrying students back and forth each day.”

“Now that you mention it, I did notice a new crop of teenagers hanging out at the malt shop in town. Remember those days, Martha.”

“Yes. I do, Daniel. You always did have a sweet tooth, especially for those root beer floats and double chocolate malts old Mr. Hall made behind the counter.”

“Those were the days, Martha. Before all this computer mumbo jumbo and virtual reality entertainment. Nothing like the beginning of a new school year to re-energize Captain’s Point.”

“Daniel, the town’s been buzzing all summer with activities, but I know what you mean. The football games will start soon. Fall is just around the corner.”

“I look forward to the chill air returning, moderating this stifling summer heat we’ve experienced. Even ocean breezes couldn’t compensate for that.”

“I never did enjoy doing my homework in the sweltering heat at Montgomery House, before the air conditioning.”

“So that’s why you hung out at the library so much back then. Isn’t it, Martha?

“And I always believed it was because of a certain handsome football player who needed extra study time, keeping his eye on a certain beautiful co-ed who hung out at his Thursday practices.”

“You’ll never know for sure. Will you?”

“All I know, Martha, is that it all worked out in the end, didn’t it?”

“Absolutely, Daniel.”

“Join me in raising my glass of lemonade to another senior class at Captain’s Point High.”

July 22, 2016 – Fireworks, Festivities and Fun

“Half the year has flown by! Hasn’t it, Daniel?”

“You can say that again, Martha. Wasn’t that a spectacular Fourth of July fireworks display at the Point this year?”

“Absolutely. I’m particularly partial to the bright blues and greens as the rockets burst into the air.”

“My favorite, too, and the twinkling white fountain-like fireworks gracefully cascading to earth.”

“You always were a romantic, Daniel. I think the summer weather and beach activities of the season ignite a powerful magic in you.”

“As I recall, Martha, you always have an extra spark of something special when summer rolls around as well.”

“Let’s get our minds back on track, Daniel. We have much work to do.”

“Work to do?”

“Yes, as always, we need to make sure that all our friends and relatives in Captain’s Point have a fun and eventful rest of the summer. Montgomery’s must be in tip top shape, the Martha’s Joy should be inspected, and the marina needs to be watched over whilst all our citizens enjoy the benefits of life in Captain’s Point. I can’t be everywhere at once.”

“That’s true, Martha. I suppose I could help out in those areas.  That is, unless I’m napping in a shady hammock by the beach or trying some of Chester’s world famous crab cakes.”

“Isn’t that just like a man?”

“Well, Martha, I have to be true to myself, but you know you can count on me. We’re in this together.”

“Indeed, Daniel.”

June 27, 2016 – June in Captain’s Point Equals Regattas, Romance and Ribs

“School’s out, Daniel. Summer’s here. Captain’s Point residents are flocking to the beach. Can’t you feel the warm ocean breezes sweeping over our fine town?”

“Indeed, Martha. Speaking of ocean breezes, the winds were perfect earlier this month when the annual Captain’s Point Regatta took place.”

“I agree, Daniel. Sails were billowing in the wind as a record number of entrants raced around the Point. I remember many a summer evening when we’d cruise around on Martha’s Joy after the regatta.”

“Romance filled the air, and we enjoyed every moment of our times together.”

“Remember the time we joined our friends for a barbeque on the beach, Daniel.  That special June many years ago?”

“You mean the afternoon we frolicked in the ocean, cooked delicious ribs that took hours, and dined until the stars came out?”

“That was the evening, Daniel. You told me you loved me for the first time.”

“I remember it well, Martha. From that moment on, our lives would never be the same.”

“Daniel, I have a prediction.”

“What’s that, Martha?”

“This year, as beach barbeques go on and sailing vessels take to the waters off Captain’s Point, many young couples will fall in love, ride the waves, and enjoy pounds of ribs like never before.”

“You really mean as always, don’t you, Martha? Because, even as the world changes, much still remains the same, especially here in Captain’s Point.”

“Well said, Daniel!”

May 17, 2016 – May Means Azaleas and More!

“Those April showers we experienced certainly did bring out the May flowers, wouldn’t you say, Martha?”

“They’re gorgeous, Daniel, especially my azalea bushes lining the grounds of Montgomery House. Their hues of rose, white and pink seem more vibrant this year.”

“Speaking of azaleas, I saw the gardeners at Chesterton Cove pruning away in preparation for the annual clambake.  Memorial Day will be here before we know it.”

“You’re right, Daniel.  Now that the weather has moderated, more outdoor activities will occupy the residents of Captain’s Point.”

“I can smell the aroma of grilling meat, now, Martha.

“Personally, Daniel, I can’t wait for fresh Silver Queen corn to arrive at the farmers’ markets.  Put that on the grill with some herbed butter, and I’m in heaven.”

“Don’t forget the fresh seafood.  Lobsters, clams, and oysters, oh boy!”

“Sounds like we’d better get ready for an active social calendar this month, Daniel.”

“You can say that again, Martha.  And I want to be right by your side.”

“Always, Daniel.  Always.”

April 5, 2016 – April Showers Bring Much More Than May Flowers!

“You know the old saying, Daniel?”

“There are so many, Martha.  To which are you referring?”

“To ‘April showers bring May flowers,’ of course.”

“If you ask me, Martha, I’d say they bring that and a whole lot more.  There are cherry blossoms lining the streets of Captain’s Point.”

“Don’t forget the beautiful apple blossoms, dogwoods and Bradford pear trees. Those are breathtaking, as if a blanket of pink, rose and white pave the way to a bright spring and warm, wonderful summer.”

“I can tell that mind of yours is working on all cylinders, planning for the future, Martha.”

“You don’t know the half of it, Daniel.”

“Do tell.”

“Not a chance, Daniel.  My lips are sealed.  The only thing I’ll say is don’t be surprised when the window boxes and planters at the marina overflow with the colors that make Captain’s Point such a vibrant place in which to live.”

“Then the colors will spread onto the Atlantic – the familiar reds, yellows, blues, greens, whites and oranges of sailboats cruising the waters offshore. Life at the marina is about to explode.”

“I can’t wait, Daniel.”

“Let’s enjoy all the colorful changes, right here, Martha – together.”

“That’s the way I always prefer to enjoy them, Daniel.  Right here beside you.”

March 15, 2016 – March Means Green, Zing and Spring!

“Spring is around the corner, Daniel.  I can’t wait until all the gardens are in bloom.”

“That’s what March brings, Martha.  Lots of green, and I don’t mean just lush grass and blooms.”

“Oh, you mean Captain’s Point’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.  With green shamrocks decorating the town, everyone comes together in their festive attire for that special event.”

“Not to mention the pitchers of green beer Patrick’s pub will be pouring that day, Martha.”

“Yes, Daniel, the month of March brings a zing to everyone’s step as we prepare for the wonders of spring.”

“You know, Martha, we might even spot a leprechaun or two by the marina making mischief.”

“Do you know something I don’t, Daniel?”

“I’m not sure what you’re talking about, Martha.”

“If I remember correctly, you always had a little mischief up your sleeve around this time of year, practicing for April Fools’ Day.”

“Well, I suppose you’ll just have to wait and see, Martha.  Concentrate on the blossoming wonders surrounding you and leave the mischief to me.”

“Whatever you say, Daniel.  I can’t wait.”

February 23, 2016 – Leap Day 2016 is Approaching!

“Well, Martha, now that all the hoopla and festivities are over surrounding Valentine’s Day, I suppose the residents of Captain’s Point can get back to business, immersing themselves in activities as they prepare for springtime.”

“Not so fast, Daniel.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’ve forgotten that 2016 is a leap year.”

“I hadn’t given that much thought, Martha.”

“Obviously, but we women never forget that with leap year comes Leap Day, February 29, otherwise referred to as Sadie Hawkins Day.  You know, the day that it’s acceptable for a women to ask out the man of her dreams.”

“Now that you mention it, I do recall being asked to some Sadie Hawkins dances, Martha.”

“I’m sure you do, Daniel. I know all too well how many heads you turned in high school. Speaking of high school, Captain’s Point High is hosting a Sadie Hawkins dance next Monday night.”

“Well, then, I’d expect that, even though the young women of our town are asking the young men out, know that Beth’s Buds flower shop will be a buzz with activity, Martha.”

“And the dress shop, of course.”

“Of course.”

“Oh, how I’d love to be a fly on the wall in that auditorium next Monday, Daniel.”

“Consider it done, Martha.”

“Daniel Sheffield, would you be so kind as to accept my invitation to the dance?”

“In a heartbeat, my love!”

January 19, 2016 – Out with the Old and In with the New!

“Well, Daniel, another year has dawned in Captain’s Point!  2016!”

“Yes, Martha.  Time sure does fly.”

“Even though the holiday festivities are over, I still have a sense of activity behind the scenes.  Our fine residents are refocusing on their day-to-day lives, making plans for the future.”

“Ah…New Year’s resolutions and all that, Martha.”

“Absolutely, Daniel.  I suppose we should make a few of our own.”

“Like what?”

“Like protecting and guiding the ones we love, Daniel.”

“I thought we were already doing that, Martha.”

“There’s always room for improvement, Daniel, no matter what our age or situation.  I sense rebirth in the town for the New Year.  New life and new beginning are in the air. It’s never too late to begin anew.”

“I suppose you have a point, Martha.  You always saw the rainbow after the rain.”

“I predict great things for our town in 2016.  Just you watch.”

“Out with the old and in with the new, Martha.”

“I second that, Daniel.  Happy New Year!”

December 15, 2015 – Captain’s Point – A Winter Wonderland!

“Daniel, have you ever seen anything more beautiful than our sweet town of Captain’s Point now decorated for the holiday season?”

“You say that every year, Martha.”

“I know, but this year Captain’s Point strikes me as particularly festive.  Every shop and establishment at the marina went all out this year with wreaths adorning each door, evergreen swags lining the wrought-iron railings, and boats laced with white twinkle lights.”

“Yes, that’s all very beautiful, Martha, but I think I know what it is that makes this year different.”

“What, Daniel?”

“This year, the town’s chosen the twenty foot tall blue spruce as Captain’s Point official Christmas tree for the annual lighting tomorrow night.”

“That explains the extra flourish of activity I’ve notice for the last week, Daniel. Men on ladders placed ornaments and draped garland from every branch.”

“They even had to borrow a large crane to place the gold star on the very top.”

“Tonight, presents will fill the space on the giant tree skirt, then tomorrow night, after the lighting ceremony and caroling party, they’ll be distributed to all residents in need this year, Daniel.”

“Indeed, Martha.  One thing you can say about our Captain’s Point residents, they’re a generous, giving and loving bunch.”

“I agree, Daniel.  Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas, my dear Martha.”

November 18, 2015 – A Season of Thanks!

“Daniel, can you believe Thanksgiving is little more than three weeks away?”

“Time does fly, Martha.  Seems like it was only yesterday that you and I were commenting about how beautiful the cherry tree blooms were, and now, autumn leaves are falling at our feet, blanketing our fine town of Captain’s Point in oranges, reds and yellows.”

“We have a lot to be thankful for this year, don’t we, Daniel?”

“I suppose we do, Martha.  We’ve experienced almost another entire year together watching over our loved ones and all our Captain’s Point neighbors.”

“Yes, and my favorite time of year is just beginning, Daniel.  Witnessing all the gestures of love and thanks our relatives and Captain’s Point residents alike will shower their precious families with warms my heart.  Imagine their festive dinners, sharing photos and stories.”

“Don’t forget about delicious food, Martha.  I request a drumstick, please.”

“By the looks of the turkey prospects at Montgomery Farm, I don’t think that will be a problem.”

“Speaking of the farm, I’m thankful that they still have Silver Queen, after all these years, Martha.  Adrianna adores that Shetland.”

“Were you spying on us, Daniel?  You left us long before I ever chose that pony for her.”

“Let’s just say, I’ve always had an eye out for my best girl.”

“You know what I’m most thankful for this year, Daniel?”

“Tell me, Martha.”

“That this year, you and I know how the power of love keeps us all together no matter what.”

October 8, 2015 – Harvest Time!

“Martha, did you notice the hundred-year-old sugar maple we used to court under in the park?”

“Yes, Daniel.  Its leaves have turned their vibrant cherry-orange that I love!  Autumn chill is in the air, leaves are falling, children are preparing for Halloween, and one sees pumpkins and gourds everywhere.”

“Remember old Mrs. Monroe always staged the best haunted house every year?  Those were quite an experience with scary ghosts, goblins and bats all about the house, along with cobwebs and fake spiders.”

“And what about the organ music, Daniel?  That added to the spookiness of it all.”

“I’ll never forget that one high school costume party when you went as the Gypsy of Montgomery House and I went as Dracula.”

“You were the champion apple-bobber, too, as I remember it, Daniel.”

“Those were fun times, Martha.  Somehow I know this season in Captain’s Point will be every bit as scary, spooky, haunted and memorable as ours were.”

“I’d say we’ve accomplished the ghostly part of the equation, Daniel.”

“Martha, you’re absolutely right.  That we have.”

September 15, 2015 – Back to School!

“Summer’s coming to a close, Martha.  Another season has passed.  The beachgoers grow fewer and the days grow shorter.”

“That’s true, Daniel, but don’t you feel the electricity in the air?  Don’t you see the families sending their young ones back to school?  Captain’s Point shops have been abuzz with activity, as parents purchase children’s school supplies, clothes and sports equipment.”

“I suppose.”

“Remembering my school days brings back happy times.  Is it the same for you, Daniel?”

“Now that you mention it, Martha, those were extraordinary days.  I’d give anything to throw a football like I used to.  You were always cheering me on sitting in the Captain’s Point High bleachers for every practice and game.”

“You were an exceptional quarterback for the team, Daniel. And, may I add, quite the dashing young man.”

“Remember our Captain’s Point ritual of gathering after the games for a beach barbecue and bonfire?”

“How could I forget?  We did have school spirit!”

“As I recall, Martha, our practice continued, always before my planned return to college every September. Your family would have a cookout at Montgomery House, and I’d whisk you away from the others as we stole as much time as possible on the beach, walking along the shore and frolicked in the sand.”

“I remember, Daniel.”

“The youth of Captain’s Point are experiencing those same pleasures this year, as they will with each end of summer that passes, Martha.  They are the future of this great community with its stellar educational system and institutions of higher learning.”

“I’ve always had faith in the future generations of Captain’s Point watching each student’s face as they return to school in the fall, Daniel.”

“That’s my girl!  Your never-ending faith and loyalty has sustained many a generation.”

“As has yours, Daniel.  As has yours.”

August 10, 2015 – Summer Styles and Summer Sports

“Daniel, would you look at all the beachgoers enjoying this delightful summer afternoon on the beautiful shores of our beloved Captain’s Point.”

“Quite a crowd, I’d say, Martha.  Not at all like the deserted beaches we enjoyed when we were courting.  Sometimes, it felt as if we were the only two people around. When there were others around, you, in your stylish modern swimsuit, turned a fair number of heads.”

“Not like today, Daniel. Times have changed. Styles have changed.  Men and women’s suits are barely visible these days.”

“Water sports have changed, too, don’t you think, Martha?  What is that young man doing out there in the ocean on that apparatus that looks like a cross between a motorcycle and water skis?”

“I believe that’s called a jet ski.”

“A jet ski?  What will they think of next?”

“Heaven only knows, Daniel.”

“I remember one afternoon when we took my motorboat out to sea and you water skied off the back of the boat, Martha.”

“I was rather a daredevil in those days, wasn’t I, Daniel?”

“You’re still one today, my love – the most beautiful, strong-willed, stubborn, intelligent and incredible woman that I fell in love with all those summers ago.”

“Don’t make me blush, Daniel!  You weren’t so bad yourself.”

“We were the perfect summer pair, Martha.  Why did it have to end?”

“But it didn’t, Daniel!  We’ll always be the perfect pair.”

July 1, 2015 – Celebrating  the Fourth in Captain’s Point!

“I think this year’s Fourth of July celebration is one of the finest I’ve ever witnessed in Captain’s Point!  Don’t you, Daniel?”

One of the finest, yes, Martha.  Our town’s fireworks display rivals that of any larger city’s, culminating in the Grand Finale with bursts of red, white and blue. The sparkles cascading into the sea.”

“Did you observe the historic homes decked out for the occasion?  Flags flying, banners billowing in the breeze?”

“I did, Martha.”

“Residents picnicked and camped out all day, enjoying beach feasts of clams and oysters and the delicious Silver Queen corn on the cob.  Made my mouth water.”

“I remember one Fourth of July in particular many years ago, when I was courting you, Martha.  We sat on the cliffs overlooking Captain’s Point with a picnic and enjoyed the beautiful summer weather and calm seas.  By the way, your potato salad was second to none.”

“Naturally, I had the chef add that to the menu at Montgomery’s, Daniel.”

“After our meal, we witnessed a superb show of pyrotechnics, didn’t we?  But that night, the fireworks in the sky weren’t the only ones going off.”

“That’s right, Daniel.  That’s the evening you proposed to me.  I shall never forget.”

“I shan’t either, because you said yes and made me the happiest man alive.”

“We’ll always share that special Fourth of July, my love!”

June 2, 2015 – June Joy!

“Wasn’t it a lovely weekend, Daniel?”

“It was indeed, Martha.  I could’ve sat for hours watching sailors and yachtsmen ready their vessels for weekend and summer cruising.”

“Children are getting restless for their summer vacations, too, as Captain’s Point schools near the close of another year.”

“June weather makes me yearn to sail our Atlantic waters whenever I can, Martha.”

“Maybe Adrianna will soon prepare Martha’s Joy for the season.  I’d love to see it come out of dry dock and for her to host another seaworthy dinner party and cruise.”

“I know you miss your prized yacht, Martha.  We enjoyed quite a few cruises together in the good ole days, didn’t we?”

“I have a confession to make, Daniel.”

“What could that possibly be?”

“That I’ve sneaked aboard Martha’s Joy.”

“When was that?”

“When Chase escorted Adrianna on board last year for her introduction and tour.”

“I have a confession to make, too, Martha.”

“What have you been up to, Daniel?”

“Oh, keeping watch, as usual, on some of my favorite people in Captain’s Point.  I, too, snuck aboard the vessel several times.”

She chuckled.  “Obviously, great minds think alike.”

“And great hearts, too, Martha.”

May 6, 2015 – May Days in Captain’s Point!

“Daniel, don’t you just love this beautiful May weather we’re having?  Cool nights, warm days, blue skies, and calm seas.”

“I do, indeed, Martha.  The residents of Captain’s Point are flocking to the marina now, preparing their boats and setting sail! I love watching the boaters enjoy the fine Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay waters.”

“April showers do bring May flowers, too, Daniel.  The gardens over at Montgomery House are blooming and bursting with color! The pink and white azalea bushes, the daffodils, everything. I can’t wait until the rose garden is at its peak.”

“You always did love your roses, didn’t you Martha?”

“I can enjoy them now, too, Daniel, even if it is from a distance. Their fragrance is heavenly.”

“I remember one May day, many years ago, when I came calling.”

“You do?”

“Yes.  I was told you were in the rose garden, so I made my way there to surprise you.”

“I don’t remember that, Daniel.”

“My dear Martha, you looked beautiful in a white flowing dress, sitting on a bench under the apple blossom tree admiring your prized roses of red and pink and yellow.  You were deep in thought, and I touched your shoulder.”

“Now I remember, Daniel!  I was sad that I hadn’t heard from you since your last mission, but then I felt your touch.”

“I never wanted to leave you, Martha – never.”

“Don’t worry, Daniel.  We’re together now, and that’s all that matters, isn’t it?”

“You’re right once again, Dearest.  We’ll always be together, now.”

April 6, 2015 – Spring: Rebirth and Renewal in Captain’s Point

“Wasn’t Easter Sunday here in Captain’s Point beautiful this year, Daniel?”

“Indeed, Martha, it was, but isn’t it always?”

“True, but I feel a heightened sense of renewal after such a long winter.  The snow has given way to daffodils blooming in the park, and the cherry blossoms are showing their buds about to bloom into a most exquisite sight.”

“You know what else, Martha?”

“No, Daniel. Tell me.”

“Love is in the air.”

“You old romantic.  Daniel Sheffield, do you know something I don’t?”

“No, it’s just a feeling I have.  Our family and friends were out and about enjoying the spring weather, going to church, and celebrating Easter.  Happiness shone in all their faces.  Hope, faith, love!  That’s what I saw.”

“You’re right, Daniel.  I expect we’re in for a few surprises this spring and summer with our ever-growing family and historic preservation going on in the coming months in our seaside town.”

“You know what the best part is, Martha?”

“That you and I are here together to witness these changes!”

March 4, 2015 – Captain’s Point – A Winter Wonderland!

“Martha, doesn’t our fair town look enchanting with its freshly fallen snow cover?”

“It reminds me of the winter of ’94, Daniel.  That storm was a mighty one, coming off the sea like it did.  The wind howled, and the waves crashed far upon the shore.  I thought our little town would flood.”

“That was a rough one, all right, but after the worst of it, I looked down and saw the beauty of the dense snowflakes melting into the ocean and blanketing our town in a solid white coat of loveliness.”

“I remember after that storm, the icicles dripping off Montgomery House and the gazebo.”

“And, I recall Sheffield Place lost power for almost a day after that gigantic oak toppled from the weight of the ice and snow on its branches.”

“Daniel, do you know what I love about this winter storm above all the others in recent years?”

“What is that, Martha?”

“That we’re experiencing it together.”

“I wish I had been with you, Martha, during all those other storms throughout the years that you endured alone.  You know, it was not my choice to leave you.”

“I know, Daniel.  Besides, I was never alone. I always had Penny and Otis.  All of that’s water under the bridge, or should I say snow under the bridge?  What matters is that we’re together now.”

“You’re right as always, my sweet Martha.  I love you.”

“I love you, too, Daniel, and I always will.”

February 12, 2015 – Valentine’s Day in Captain’s Point!

“Daniel, have I told you lately how much I love you?”

“Only every day since we’ve been reunited, Martha.”

“Perhaps so, but with Valentine’s Day approaching, old memories of our past keep popping up in my head.”

“You are the sentimental one, Martha.  Didn’t you tell me you saved all my letters and cards all those years ago, when we were in our prime?”

“You mean when we were courting and engaged.”

“I love Valentine’s Day in Captain’s Point, Daniel.  Beth expects huge shipments of roses for her shop today, and she has two deliverymen on stand-by, preparing for the large list of deliveries all around Captain’s Point.”

“I spied workers in the candy shop creating delectable chocolate treats for the occasion myself, Martha.  Not to mention, Montgomery’s pastry chef whipping up a few unforgettable masterpieces.”

“Of all the Valentine’s Days we’ve spent together, with the exception of our last spent at Montgomery House with you serenading me in my rose garden, I’m most looking forward to this one, my Daniel.  Our love has deepened and grown.  Evolving from initial feelings to an enduring love that has stood the test of time.  My hope for the younger members of our families and friends is that they, too, will know the same truth of love as we do.”

“A wonderful wish this Valentine’s Day, my love!  Indeed, a wonderful wish.”

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Daniel.”

“And to you, my sweet Martha.”

January 27, 2015 – New Year’s In Captain’s Point!

“Well, Daniel, another year is dawning in our hometown, and 2015 promises to be every bit as eventful as the last few years have been for all our wonderful friends and family in Captain’s Point.”

“I can’t argue with you on that point, Martha.  Did you hear about the improvement plans for the historic district and residences of our fine community?”

“I did catch wind of changes in the air.  Something about renovations to Blue Wolf Manor and the old Ridgewell home on Tuttle Avenue?”

“That’s what I heard, too, but that young whippersnapper, historical architect Pete Marlborough, and his interior designer, Julia Henderson, have been taking the historic district by storm, making their mark.  Wonder what they’ll be up to this year?”

“Good question, Daniel.  Speaking of which, have you made a New Year’s resolution, yet?”

“Yes, it’s to make you as happy as can be, Martha.  You’re the love of my life, and now, we have all eternity to spend together, making me the happiest man in the universe.”

“And I’m the happiest woman, but you’re too good to me.  You always were.”

“All I want is you, Martha, right here by my side, as we watch our loved ones and friends continuing to build and enrich their lives in Captain’s Point throughout this new year.”

December 2, 2014 – Christmas Past and Christmas Present!

“Daniel, that Thanksgiving meal my lovely niece Adrianna cooked looked delicious from up here.  It reminded me of old times, when I’d entertain all our friends and relatives for the occasion.  I would set the table with my best china and crystal, and Otis carved the turkey, while Penny helped with the side dishes.”

“But, Martha, the fun is just beginning.  Remember, as soon as the holiday weekend came to an end, you were knee-deep in all the Christmas preparations.

“It took Otis, Penny, and you a full week to deck-out and decorate Montgomery House just the way that you liked.  The holly bushes would be blooming, and you always placed poinsettia towers on either side of the front porch. Candles lit each window, and the natural wreaths on the doors and the gate posts at the ends of the drive sparkled.”

“Remember the last Christmas we had together, Daniel, right before you shipped out for duty?”

“It snowed!”

“How beautiful Montgomery House looked!  The grounds were blanketed, the bird-feeders were full, and a delicate veil of white stuck to the granite façade and the roof of the tower.”

“You’re right, Martha.  That was a magical Christmas.  I have a feeling your niece and her husband will have a special holiday season in the house this year as well.  Somehow, I know it.”

“Adrianna has all the important qualities of a Montgomery, just like her father.”

“And she has all the beauty of her Italian mother.”

“You’re right, Daniel.  Captain’s Point and Montgomery House will celebrate the season in style, and I, for one, don’t want to miss one minute of it.”

November 3, 2014 – Thanksgiving Pride!

“Look at our town, Martha!” Daniel Sheffield drew his forever fiancée’s attention. “Captain’s Point, as it now is, appears beautiful in autumn, don’t you think?”

“I have to say I’ve never seen our little town looking so vibrant,” she agreed. “Look at the autumn leaves falling all over the Point! The contrast they form against the blues of the sea beyond is spectacular. I love the brilliant hues of yellows and oranges and reds against the striking green grass of the park as well.”

“You’re right.”

“From up here, we have the perfect vantage point to keep up with all the fall festivities,” she continued. “Last night, I was impressed with the way the miniature gold and white twinkle lights lit up the boardwalk and shops at Montgomery Marina so nicely – especially Montgomery’s, my restaurant!”

“Now, Martha, you know that young man you hired years ago owns it now, and it’s still flourishing.”

“Yes, hiring John Thornburg as head chef was that best decision I ever made. I’ll bet he’s preparing the menus for Thanksgiving now, including all of our traditional recipes. I wish I could taste again the herb-crusted prime rib, my favorite, as well as our butter-basted turkey that melts in your mouth.”

“Don’t forget his famous chestnut stuffing and oyster stew. I’m recalling its taste it now, and you’re wrong Martha. The best decision you ever made was writing that letter and bringing your lovely great-niece Adrianna back to her ancestral home within the pages of A Clue for Adrianna, our first Captain’s Point novel.”

July 13, 2014

Another beautiful day is dawning over the Atlantic here in Captain’s Point, Maryland, our small town nestled by the sea. Montgomery House, a gray granite structure built two centuries earlier by Captain Jebediah Montgomery, stands tall against the wind at the end of the Point, complete with its three-story, octagonal tower.

Max, a Chihuahua/Beagle mix wags his tail unaware of the danger that waits ahead. Nip, the black and white outdoor cat, suns himself in the rose garden, watching the gulls overhead.

In the tower suite bedroom, Martha Montgomery pulls out a sheet of lilac-scented paper and begins to write a letter that will change the peaceful Point forever.
