As a seven-year-old, Jean Bascom wanted to pursue a career breeding cats or blowing things up in labs. By the time she was twelve, writing seemed more attractive than either claw marks or chemical burns, and she’s had a pen in her pocket ever since.
Jean attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned her Master’s Degree in Folklore. She has presented papers on folklore and popular culture at conferences at UC Berkeley and UCLA. Aspects of fairy tales, legends, and every-day magic permeate Jean’s writing.
Jean’s poetry has been published in the Minnemingo Review. Current projects include a historical fiction set in Petrine Russia, short stories, and Tales of the Tiny Pirates, a middle grade novel co-authored by her sister-in-law. In 2012, Jean served on the board of ARP Magazine. In her free time, Jean records public domain literature for LibriVox.org. She reads and writes from her home in Maryland, where she lives with her husband Josh and their stuffed blue dinosaur, Bloob.
She is a founding member of From Women’s Pens.
